She grew up in Iran before moving to England at age eleven. She attended the University of Rhode Island, where she received a degree in journalism in 1983. Three years later, she was working for CNN in New York City.

After being relocated to Frankfurt, West Germany in 1989, through her job at CNN, she became CNN's on-the-spot reporter, covering the political climate during the sweeping changes of pro-democracy being brought to eastern Europe; this was her big break.
